Please consult your local guidelines for storing breast milk for healthy newborns (not premature babies) - (consult your doctor, midwife, or lactation consultant if necessary). Before preparing to store breast milk, wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water. DO NOT store breast milk in the refrigerator/freezer door. The door is usually the warmest part of the refrigerator/freezer. Label breast milk with dates and use the oldest milk to feed your baby first. DO NOT store breast milk in the refrigerator/freezer door. The door is usually the warmest part of the refrigerator/freezer. Label the milk with the date and use the oldest milk to feed your baby first. DO NOT THAW breast milk in very hot or boiling water (no more than 37°C). Cool freshly expressed milk before adding it to older, stored breast milk. Ideally, thaw frozen milk in the refrigerator overnight or place the container under cool running water, gradually warming the water (no more than 37°C) until the milk thaws. Once the milk is liquid but still cool, dry the bottle and store it in the refrigerator (at least 4°C) until ready to use. Before use, gently swirl the milk in the bottle in a circular motion before feeding your baby to mix any separated layers. It is normal for expressed milk to appear thin, bluish, yellowish, or even brownish, and during storage, it will separate into a milky layer and a creamy layer. Some mothers notice that their milk has a slightly soapy odor after thawing due to high levels of lipase, an enzyme that breaks down fat. The milk is still safe to use, but some babies refuse to drink it. Heating the milk to scalding point (bubbles around the edges but not boiling) and then quickly cooling it before freezing can deactivate the lipase. If the milk has a sour odor, do not give it to your baby.
